Volunteer

Ridderrennet runs on volunteer power. Behind every grin at the finish line, every shared cup of cocoa and every triumphant lap of the slalom course, there is someone in a high-vis jacket who turned up, mucked in and made it happen. That someone could be you.

Our volunteers come from every corner of life: students, retired ski instructors, dentists who fancied a week off, families on a mission, friends who decided to do something different together. The one thing they have in common, by the end of the week, is the slightly dazed grin of a person who has just had the best holiday of the year.

What you would actually do

It depends on the week and on what you fancy. The roles broadly fall into a few buckets:

  • Companion (ledsager) at Ridderweek. Ski alongside a blind or partially sighted participant, call the turns, share the chairlift conversation and generally be their eyes on the mountain. Full briefing provided. Hot chocolate also provided.
  • Helper at Children's Ridderweek or Riddercamp. Lend a hand with activities, mealtimes, evening entertainment and whatever else the programme throws at you. The children are remarkable. So are the days.
  • Office and logistics. If you would rather be the calm voice on the radio than the one out in the snow, our planning and operations team would love to hear from you.

You do not need to be a champion skier. You do not need any special qualifications. What you do need is a willingness to roll up your sleeves and a sense of humour for the moments when the snow refuses to cooperate.

Why people keep coming back

Ask any of our long-standing volunteers, and you will hear some version of the same story: they signed up for a week expecting to give something away, and somehow came home with rather more than they brought. Friendships that long outlast the season. A week of fresh mountain air. The particular kind of pride that only comes from helping someone do something they thought they could not.

One of our partner companies put it best, after their team came back from their first Ridderweek: "Our staff came home a little changed."

For companies and organisations

Sending colleagues to volunteer at Ridderrennet is a properly memorable way to put diversity and inclusion into practice, rather than just into the staff handbook. Volunteers come back with stories, perspective and a fresh take on what teamwork really looks like.

Every employer we have worked with says the same thing: the team that returns is closer, sharper and a touch more curious about the world than the one that left.

If you would like to explore something for your organisation, we would be delighted to talk it through.

Who we work with

We have long-running partnerships with universities and colleges, sports organisations and businesses across Norway and beyond. If you represent an institution that would like to put inclusion at the heart of its work, do get in touch.
