About classification

At Ridderweek 2026 you can be classified in cross-country and alpine. If you have been classified before, you can also be re-classified.

For participants with visual and physical impairments we follow the rules set by FIS (the International Ski and Snowboard Federation).

Classification takes place on the second floor of Radisson Blu Beitostølen.

New for the coming season

For visually impaired athletes, new thresholds have been introduced for the various classes. Alpine now has four classes rather than three: AS1, AS2, AS3 and AS4.

Cross-country still has three classes: NS1, NS2 and NS3.

Criteria

  • Physical impairment: criteria for minimum impairment are set according to the nature of each sport.
  • Visual impairment: the same threshold for minimum visual impairment applies across all sports.

Categories

  • Visually impaired (partially sighted and blind)
  • Physical impairment, standing
  • Physical impairment, seated

How classification works

Visually impaired: carried out by an authorised classification team of two ophthalmologists.

Physical impairment: carried out by authorised classifiers working in a team of medical and sports specialists.

Classification has three parts:

  • Functional diagnosis
  • Standardised functional tests
  • Observation during training and competition
