Where do we stay?
At Riddercamp we sleep rather close to nature, in traditional lavvu tents pitched on the sports field by Beitostølen Healthsports Centre.
Sleeping in a lavvu
Participants are grouped five to a Tentipi lavvu, with one or two volunteers sharing each tent. There is ample room, and every lavvu has a paraffin or diesel stove to take the chill off mornings and evenings.
Bring your own sleeping bag. A wool blanket is considered essential, and you may borrow one if you would rather not pack yours. A larger communal lavvu, seating thirty, serves as our dining and activity space when the weather takes a turn for the dramatic.
Meals and good company
Breakfast and dinner happen at camp, either around the fire outdoors or gathered in the communal lavvu. Lunch is a packed affair, assembled over breakfast, with everyone taking turns to lend a hand. We eat hot food with non-metal utensils, which spares fingers that may be less sensitive to heat.
Everyone pitches in to keep the camp tidy. Many hands make light work, and rather better company.
Facilities
The camp sits on the sports field at Beitostølen Healthsports Centre, with access to toilets, showers and changing rooms in the adjacent school and activity buildings during agreed hours. For quick washes, we use water containers and basins set up around the camp.
