Accessibility statement
The Ridderrennet Association is committed to making this website accessible to everyone, and especially to the people at the heart of what we do: our blind and partially sighted skiers. This statement sets out how we have gone about that, where we know we still have work to do, and how to let us know if something is not quite right.
This statement applies to the English version of our site at ridderrennet-en.ghost.io.
The standard we follow
We build to WCAG 2.1, level AA, the universal design standard for public-sector websites in Norway. The guidelines are grouped around four principles: what we put online should be perceivable, operable, understandable and robust.
What we have put in place
Here is what we have done in practice, so far:
- Screen reader support. Semantic HTML with proper headings, lists and landmark regions (header, main, navigation and footer), and descriptive labels on links and form fields. The page language is set to English.
- Alt text on images. Images that carry information have a descriptive alt text. Purely decorative images have an empty alt attribute, so screen readers can skip them.
- Keyboard navigation. The whole site can be operated from the keyboard using Tab, Enter or Space, and Esc. A "Skip to main content" link appears the first time you press Tab, so you do not have to wade through the navigation on every page.
- A clear focus indicator. Whichever element you are currently focused on is highlighted with a visible outline.
- Colour contrast. Body text and interactive elements meet the WCAG AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large headings).
- Responsive design. The site works on desktop, tablet and phone, and can be zoomed to 200% without losing content.
Where we still have work to do
We want to be honest about where we have not quite got there yet:
- A handful of our older PDF documents are not fully tagged for screen readers. If you come across one you cannot use, do get in touch and we will send you an HTML version.
- Some of the images on our news articles use the article title as their alt text, which is a start but not always ideal. We are gradually improving these as we revisit older articles.
- Videos embedded from other platforms may not have captions, since they are not always ours to caption. We flag this where we can and choose captioned versions whenever they are available.
